Legal Services
Parents of children with special needs will occasionally need to access services/organizations that will address any legal or advocacy issues that may arise as they try to get the most medical, rehabilitative and/or educational services for their child and as they try to create as favorable an environment for that child as possible. The following are some general statewide and/or national organizations that could assist the parents of the Special Needs child.

Statewide Parent and Advocacy Network, Inc. (SPAN)
The mission of SPAN is to empower families and other individuals interested in the well being and education rights of children with special needs. They work towards this goal by providing information, training, technical assistance, support and the exchange of ideas.

The New Jersey Center for Outreach and Services for Autism (COSAC)
COSAC is a non-profit agency providing information and advocacy, services, family and professional education and consultation to New Jersey. It is dedicated to ensuring that all people with autism receive appropriate, effective services to maximize their growth and potential and to enhancing the overall awareness of the general public.

New Jersey Protection and Advocacy, Inc. (NJP&A)
New Jersey Protection and Advocacy Inc. is the consumer-directed, non-profit organization that serves as New Jersey’s designated protection and advocacy system for people with disabilities in the state. Its mission is to protect, advocate for and advance the rights of persons with disabilities in pursuit of a society in which persons with disabilities exercise self-determination and choice, and are treated with dignity. It’s activities are grounded in it’s belief in the inherent value and worth of all individuals and their right to equality of opportunity and full participation in their communities.

N.J. Managed Care Consumer Assistance
HCCAP is a program of New Jersey Protection and Advocacy, Inc. that assists New Jersey citizens with disabilities with
health care and insurance matters. All individuals with disabilities and their families of representatives are eligible for HCCAP’s services.
It provides:
- information and referral
- individual advocacy and legal representation
- education and educational materials
- training and technical assistance
HCCAP also pursues systems advocacy to identify and address deficiencies in the health care and insurance systems that provide services to individuals with disabilities.

New Jersey Immigration Policy Network (NJIPN/the Network)
The mission of the New Jersey immigration Policy Network, is a statewide non-profit coalition dedicated to a fair and humane immigration policy which ensures respect, dignity and justice for all newcomers to the United States and which betters the life of the community as a whole. They focus on advocacy, legislation, and public policy and serve as a clearinghouse for information, publications, technical assistance and professional training.
