Perinatal Addictions Prevention Project

The Perinatal Addictions Prevention Project focuses on improving birth outcomes by reducing the number of infants exposed to substances in utero. The project has three main components, the first is the use of a statewide screening tool, the 4 P's Plus, to assist in identifying pregnant women who might be at risk for using drugs, alcohol or tobacco. The second component is professional and community education about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and the effects of drugs and tobacco on the fetus as well as substance abuse prevention. The third component is networking and being a resource for the community. Women identified with a substance abuse problem who are in need of a referral to a treatment program that will be at the appropriate level of care can contact the Risk Reduction Coordinator. A Directory of Services is provided to all healthcare providers in Hudson County.
The Perinatal Addictions Advisory Committee, with members from healthcare providers and treatment programs, meets quarterly to identify community needs, barriers to treatment, available treatment programs for women and networking between agencies.
